Turkish football has set off an anti-gambling storm in recent days. The Turkish Football Association self-examined 571 active referees and 152 of them bet on gambling. Turkish officials have also initially identified 3,700 players suspected of gambling and will investigate cross-border gambling + review assets. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan issued a formal statement at a joint press conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Mertz in response to the recent referee gambling scandal that shocked Turkish football. President Erdogan pointed out: "Recently exposed referee incidents are causing concern. When such incidents occur in football matches, the country must not sit idly by and must take necessary intervention. Relevant measures have been implemented." The President finally emphasized: "When citizens witness the development of the situation in the stands, they will naturally start to ask 'what is the explanation for these chaos'."
